Rent receipt: template, obligations and automation
Updated on July 1, 2026 · 6 min read
A rent receipt certifies that the tenant has paid the full rent and charges for a given period. The landlord must provide it free of charge on request. Here is what it must contain and how to automate it.
What is a rent receipt?
It is a document given by the landlord to a tenant who has paid rent and charges in full. It differs from a payment slip, which only acknowledges a partial payment.
Under French law, the landlord cannot charge for issuing a receipt: it is free and may be sent electronically if the tenant agrees.
Mandatory details
A compliant receipt includes:
- landlord and tenant names, and the rented property address;
- the period concerned (rent month);
- the breakdown: rent excluding charges, charges, total;
- the issue date and confirmation of full payment received.
Automating receipts
Issuing receipts by hand each month is time-consuming and error-prone. A property-management tool like Lokatix generates compliant receipts automatically once payment is recorded, and emails them to the tenant.
